This article aims to analyze how Mme d’Aulnoy managed to prepare her readers for the “marvelous” aspects of her fairy tales by framing them within a narrative set in the royal domain of Saint-Cloud. Through the use of specific textual images such as mise en abyme and ekphrasis, and by playing on the enchanting reputation of Saint-Cloud, the storyteller also contributed to the creation of the magic of Saint-Cloud, much like the artists and craftsmen who accomplished this architectural, pictorial, and aesthetic masterpiece. This article will lexplore this by comparing fictional and non-fictional texts that describe Saint-Cloud during its peak.
