For the modern public, the description of Paris in the Cosmographie universelle, written by François de Belleforest and published in 1575, is probably disappointing: the author reproduces other texts and is more concerned with historiography than scientific cartography. However, thanks to new perspectives offered by recent theories of cartography, this description of Paris, published at the time of the French Wars of Religion, appears more like a political discourse, translating the opinions of urban elites and defending their interests.
