Abstract

Yourcenarian essays published around 1920-30 constitute a veritable laboratory of ideas from which the author drew for the creation of her works. The brief reference to Pirandello in “Diagnostic de l’Europe” attests to our hypothesis, enabling us to make an interesting rereading of Denier du rêve. Starting with Pirandello’s comments on cinema, we were able to grasp another aspect of the novel, while at the same time shedding light on Yourcenar’s critique of fascism: the role of image culture in the establishment of a totalitarian regime such as Italian fascism.

Maria Rosa Chiapparo, Université de Tours

Maria Rosa Chiapparo est docteur en Littérature Comparée. Elle est membre du groupe de recherche « Histoire des Représentations » de l’Université de Tours, de même que de la SIEY, avec lesquels elle collabore depuis de nombreuses années. Elle travaille sur la réception du fascisme en France, sur les relations franco-italiennes entre XIXe et XXe siècles, s’intéressant notamment aux rapports entre littérature et politique dans la naissance de la culture de masse. Elle s’occupe aussi du rapport entre mythe et modernité, de l'œuvre de D'Annunzio, Malaparte, Quasimodo, Corradini, Yourcenar et Cendrars.
