Published for the first time in the 1980s, Emmanuel Carrère went through various phases of production before obtaining his current recognition. In France, the vast majority of his work has been produced by the Parisian publishing house P.O.L., and his trajectory presents various decisive turns related either to his style or to his public image. In this article, I illustrate the different characteristics of each one of these phases to show how important extra-textual determinants can be in the interpretation and appreciation of Carrère’s work.Downloads
