The concept of metafiction or metanarrativity has been introduced in 1970 by William Gass and implies textual self-observation and self-reflection. This notion is often explicitly related to postmodernism, but in reality metafiction is a constant factor in the history of the novel. The contemporary novel often resorts to metafiction, as the articles in this issue demonstrate.
