This article focuses on two poems, Francis Ponge's Les écuries d’Augias and Eugenio Montale's Botta e Risposta I, both inspired by the myth of the Fifth Labour of Hercules. In the first part of the study, we consider the direct relations between the authors, in the second one we proceed to a close reading of both poems and finally, in the third part, we analyze the reasons why this comparison is worthwhile. The aim of this study is strating from a detail to reflect a broader panorama, within the framework of Italian and French poetry of the twentieth century.
