Researchers nowadays tend to show to what extent the incipit gives hints of what will be developed further in the novels, and thus invites to reread them in order to find its possible meanings. The incipit of La Carte et le territoire has a structure that grants it both a thematic and poetic quality, determining the whole book. It gives a preview of the topic's complexity as conceived by Houellebecq, but also of the narrative structure techniques and of the literary speech's nature: this is why the incipit is a key element in the dialogue between author and reader.
