This study focuses on the fictional representation of the violent oppression by French police of Algerian demonstrators in Paris on October 17, 1961. Our objective is to examine the historical reality at the heart of three Franco-Algerian novels (Le Sourire de Brahim, La Seine était rouge and Une nuit d’octobre) and, in particular, their use of literary techniques such as polyphony to denounce the French state’s ‘oversight’ of institutional violence towards Algerians in France, specifically during and after the Algerian war of independence.
