Abstract

Starting from Hervé Guibert’s extraterritorial position in relation to cinephilia stricto sensu, this article sets out to identify what “caught his eye” in the films he watched. By unearthing “unpublished” press texts and linking the cinephilic writings from his literary corpus with those from his journalistic work, the objective is to outline a distinctly Guibertian taste in cinema. From narratives of self-generation through the vision of cinematic images to the daily writing of cinephilia’s “margins”, the study explores the notions of genre (both literary and discursive) and authorial style. The article also raises the question of Guibert's activity as a film “author”.
