Abstract

The Dutch translations of Rabelais and Montaigne have received changing appreciations from the Dutch readership over the centuries. It is this reception, sometimes parallel and sometimes divergent, of these two authors that this article aims to study and contextualize.

    Paul J. Smith is Professor Emeritus of French Literature at Leiden University.  He works on French Renaissance literature, its reception in the Netherlands as well as early modern natural history.
