Elmar Tophoven or the translator as mediator-creator : sociology of a polymorphic profession

By its definition as an art of mediation, translation invites us to take into account the productivity and the creativity of mediators. Linguistically, culturally or sociologically speaking, translators pass on literary works as they impact their form, their meaning and their reception in the target culture. Through a case study of Elmar Tophoven, German translator of Samuel Beckett and the Nouveau Roman, this article intends to shed some light on the many facets of the translator's activity, as an act of mediation which shows a creative dimension.
