The editor of Cabinet des fées (1785-1789), Charles-Joseph de Mayer, demonstrates in the preliminary texts a concept of imagination serving an educational purpose, as conveyed through the fairy tales. However, he deliberately refrains from acknowledging another mode of imagination: that of the hundreds of illustrations commissioned from Clément-Pierre Marillier. A certain dialogue emerges between the editor’s texts – representative of contemporary doxa – and the series of images, which present typical situations from a gallery of romance and wonder, allowing for the recognition of a visual culture shaped by the staging of enchanted spaces.
