Abstract

A study of Marguerite Yourcenar’s correspondence with Wells Hively, combined with an examination of two versions of the opera libretto proposed by the American composer, reveals how Yourcenar, initially well-intentioned, became critical of this attempt to rewrite the Antinous episode for opera.
