The pond with grebes featured in L’Étoile au front, a play by Raymond Roussel from 1924, not only hides a precious treasure but also serves as a perfect mise en abyme of his poetic approach, where homonymy and doubles occupy the forefront. The given pond, the equation can be guessed. Marcel Duchamp was especially fascinated by the Roussellian worm from Impressions d’Afrique, a 1910 novel, which he adapted in many different ways. Yet, his last masterpiece, Étant donnés, an installation he created between 1946 and 1966, could very well connect with the famous pond. To vary the perspectives, we will end up with certain collages.
